Having developed an early passion for Music and Woodworking, contemporary French master violin maker Philippe Mahu begins his training in 1981 in Joel Mentec’s workshop in Firminy, making cellos and especially double basses.
As from 1988, Philippe Mahu joins
Having developed an early passion for Music and Woodworking, contemporary French master violin maker Philippe Mahu begins his training in 1981 in Joel Mentec’s workshop in Firminy, making cellos and especially double basses.
As from 1988, Philippe Mahu joins Etienne Vatelot’s workshop in Paris where he specializes in the high restoration and adjustment of very old stringed instruments. Experience that give him humility, expertise and inspiration.
In 2004, Philippe Mahu obtains the title of «Meilleur Ouvrier de France».
Nowadays, Philippe Mahu works with Jean-Jacques Rampal who succeded Etienne Vatelot; he is in charge of the workshop and, part-time, he successfully makes his owns instruments that have been rewarded in International Violin Making Competition :
