Cremonese luthier Riccardo Bergonzi sees his instruments as "sonic sculptures," and his high standards with regard to musical and aesthetic qualities correspond to this perspective. This contemporary Italian violin not only reflects his vision, it can also be considered a contemporary masterpiece which blends a radiant soloist sound with a finely balanced visual aesthetic. Riccardo Bergonzi, who was born in 1961, began his career at a strikingly early age: he crafted his first instrument as a twelve-year-old at the workshop of the influential master Stefano Conia. In 1979 Riccardo Bergonzi completed his studies at the violin making school in Cremona and graduated at the top of his class, only to begin teaching at his alma mater three months later. Gold medals in Bagnacavallo in 1976, 1988 and 1990 and an additional award at the Cremona Triennale in 1991 are outstanding tributes to his work. In addition to his consistent and remarkable productivity as a luthier, Riccardo Bergonzi has also made an international name for himself as a painter and sculptor, and his artistic and musical interests have an impact on his artisanal style and abilities. This full-blooded Italian violin is a perfectly executed work with unusually delicate purfling, a one-piece back of spectacular bird's-eye maple and a top of a beautiful spruce featuring an unusually stunning and very even grain. A coat of transparent, reddish-brown oil varnish covers this exceptional instrument, a violin that has been played frequently and intensely within its short lifetime but has remained in outstanding condition. After having been carefully set up at our workshop, the violin is now ready to play, and we recommend it to sophisticated musicians with an appreciation for the extraordinary. They will be delighted by its large, resonant voice full of timbre.
