Tomáš Pilař is a contemporary Czech violin maker whose work enjoys an excellent reputation among professional musicians - and has won numerous international awards for its outstanding playing and sound characteristics.
Following the pattern of Antonio Stradivari, Tomáš Pilař built this beautiful master violin in 1983, whose class is already articulated in the choice of the finest tonewoods: The extremely evenly grown spruce of the top and the tightly flamed maple of the two-piece back and ribs are shown to their best advantage under the milky, golden-orange-brown oil varnish; a noble varnish appearance that owes an interesting antique touch to its natural patina, fine craquelure and subtle traces of playing. The finely crafted purfling and the small, elegant f-holes are the kind of first-class craftsmanship that the Pilar family has been practicing since 1924: In the workshop founded by Karel Pilar, Tomas Pilar's grandfather, in Hradec Kralové, instruments are created that meet the highest musical demands - not least thanks to the solid violinistic training that is part of the family tradition among the Pilars' masters. This Tomas Pilar violin, which is in excellent condition and completely undamaged, is characterized by its exceptionally good, large and warm, resonant sound. Light and easy to play, it opens up scope for the creation of individual sound ideas even in technically demanding literature.
