Violin by Berthold Specht, Jena 1923

The Jena-based artisan luthier Berthold Specht ranks amongst the luminaries of violin-making history about whom comparatively little is known. And this is a shame, as can be seen in a noteworthy reference made to Specht's talents as a responsive and experienced repairer. No less a luminary than the painter (and gifted violinist) Paul Klee had Specht work over his violin in 1924, and he expressed great satisfaction with the outcome. Shortly before that event, in 1923, the master completed this particular violin, his 21st, as the dated and numbered original label confirms. The violin unmistakably belongs to the finest tradition of German violin making; its sweeping arch, the narrow and elegant sound holes, and the large, graceful scroll shape the character of the instrument's unique aesthetic. The light-coloured oil golden-yellow varnish is extremely transparent, making it possible to see the excellent quality of the tone woods and emphasising the deep eye-catching flames of the maple used for the two-part back and ribs. This remarkable personality of an instrument made its way into our studio in top condition and was carefully set up by our experienced luthiers. With its bright, clear and open sound and its slightly sweet note, this beautiful 1920s instrument will win over today's dedicated musicians as well.
