This beautiful antique violin was built in Klingenthal, one of the most traditional violin making places in Saxony, and is a very attractive, individually styled instrument with a convincing appearance and excellent sound properties. Inside the body there is an original label attached, with the presumably correct date 1879 and the name Christian Hoffmann, which is probably a trade name similar to Johann Christian Hoffmann (1683-1750), the famous Leipzig violin maker and friend of Johann Sebastian Bach. The very successful instrument was built after a flatly arched model. The top was made of premium quality, finely grained spruce. The appearance of the violin is determined by the brown varnish over a golden-yellow ground, as it is typical for this region, that bears tastefully applied antique touches and interesting traces of use. The antique violin is offered in very well preserved condition, undamaged beside a minor repair at the pegbox that has no impact on the sound of the instrument. It was thoroughly looked over by our luthier, who made it ready to express its bright, nuanced and colorful voice, that is warm and bears some sweet notes in the upper ranges.
